There has been so much about harvest recently. The Lord has been speaking to us about a coming harvest--the fruits of our labor for Him. What is this harvest? It is the saving of the lives, lifestyles, and actions of others. It is a the beginning of a work in other people that has already begun in ourselves. It is a harvest where people are coming in and beginning to know Him.
So, we've been seeing signs everywhere about a harvest, about harvesting, about the harvest season...for at least a week now. Thank you Jesus!
Seeing the people, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. "Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest."
Matthew 9:37
There are a few steps demonstrated here. To do true ministry, we need to be moved with compassion. Not by impulse, not by obligation, not even by kindness or pity. I think compassion is different--better--than all those things. Compassion is love that does not seek it's own (1 Corinthians 13:6). Compassion never fails.
So, we are moved with compassion, and then what? Even Jesus could not handle all these people on His own. Even He needed to receive assistance from the Father. He realized the harvest was too big for any one person to handle. And His first response was to pray. We ought to be like Him and pray for the same thing! We need to pray that God will sent out more workers. We need to pray that the Lord will equip other believers to do His work. We can pray that God will align us with others who can partner with us in the harvesting. We can pray with hope and eager expectation that the Lord of the harvest will also bring the harvest in.
When you're moved with compassion, you are moved to serve. Serving is sowing--it is doing God's work. Each should serve as they feel led, although we can all serve anywhere and everywhere. And in this sowing, the reaping of a harvest will come! This means changed lives and saved lives. The best I can do is show other's God's best. He is the one who ultimately brings in the Harvest.
